Dino Day

What a fabulous day!  Everyone did such a great job. Thank you friends and family for coming to our Dino Day celebration.   The kindergarten students worked so hard this month learning songs, poems and a dinosaur dance to perform. I could tell by all the smiling and waving that the kids had a wonderful time.  Thank you again for all your support!

Volcano Fun!

Today we had a really cool have to job. We had to use our teamwork skills to design and make a volcano with our friends. First we covered a small water bottle with tin foil to make the shape of a volcano.  Then we used plasticine to cover the tin foil. We also added some dinosaurs to add to the design.

When everyone was finished, we got a big surprise.  We put a little baking soda in each bottle and then Miss Sawrenko poured in some vinegar.  Boom!  All the volcanoes erupted!  It was very exciting.   You can watch how exciting it was below.

Dinosaur Eggs

The craziest thing happened today! We have been learning about dinosaurs and we learned that they come from eggs. We decided that we should make our own dinosaur eggs to put in our nest. Last week, we put paper and glue around a balloon and let it dry. Next we painted the eggs. Then we put the eggs in the nest. When we came to school today we heard lots of cracking and strange noises coming from the nest. We even saw an egg move all by itself! We were all very excited and could barely keep our eyes off the nest. At this point, we had to figure out what all the cracking was about. Miss Dowd gave us our own egg and then she said to sit on it. If you can believe it, when we sat on the eggs, out popped a dinosaur baby. It was AWESOME!

Our Dinosaur Puppet Shows

Over the past week, we have been hard at work writing and revising a dinosaur story.  We learned that good writer's don't get everything "right" the first time.  On the first day we came up with lots of ideas for our story and Miss Sawrenko wrote everything down for us.  The next day, we re-read our story a few times.  We liked most of the ideas, but we had to make some changes. After we revised our shared writing, everyone picked a character that they wanted to be.   We made dinosaur puppets at centers and then got to do a puppet show.  It was a lot of work, but we think it turned out great!

Dinosaur Pie

Have you ever eaten Dinosaur Pie?  Do you know how to make it?  WE DO!  It is super yummy and easy to make.  Here is how to make your own Dinosaur Pie.

Step 1.  Add green food colouring to pudding.

Step 2.  Add marshmallows and chocolate chips to the pudding.

Step 3.  Eat it!

Day of Pink

Today was the Day of Pink.  Everyone at Linwood School was asked to wear pink to stand up to bullying.  This day started in 2007 when two high school students in Nova Scotia asked their peers to wear pink the next day when they heard a male classmate was getting bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school.

To get us thinking about bullying, we read a story called Tyrone the Horrible.  After the story, we came up with a list of things we should do if we were getting bullied.  We then signed the Pink Shirt to show that we believe that is is important to stand up to bullying.

Dinosaur Murals

Last week we started our Dinosaur unit by drawing some really fun "technicolour" dinosaurs.  No one knows what colours dinosaurs really were so we used our imaginations.  Then we added some boney plates on their backs to turn them into our own special stegosaurus. (Ex we had a Trent-a-saurus and a Maddy-a-saurus, etc)  After we finished drawing our dinos we cut them out so we could add them to our class mural.

On Friday we all worked together to design our own "steamy" swamp for our dinosaurs to live in.  We had to mix a lot of paint to make sure we got just the right colour.

We wanted to give our swamp a 3-D effect so we crumpled up some tissue paper. Everyone worked so well together!

Miss Sawrenko even brought in some silk plants that we could use for specials details on our murals.
