Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

This week was Chicka Chicka Boom Boom week and we had a blast!  We started by reading both Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and then Chicka Chicka 123 by Bill Martin Jr.  We wanted to see which story the class liked the most so we learned how to take a class tally.  We found out that the morning class liked the 123 story, while the afternoon like the ABC book better.  We watched both the videos and played some fun alphabet and number games on the Smartboard too.  After our group time we went to centers.  Here is a peek at what we did this week.

We rolled out play dough to make numbers up to ten and then we added the correct number of coconuts to our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom trees.

We made our name out of magnet letters to go on the coconut tree.

We painted a coconut tree and then used our handprints to make the palm leaves.  We cut out coconuts and added letters to make it look just like the pictures in the story.

We practised colouring neatly and taking our time to do our best work!

Terry Fox Run

Today we did our Terry Fox run.  All the students went out to the field and ran around in support of Terry Fox.  Everyone had a great time! Some of us even ran into friends and family from other classrooms. Thank you to everyone who made a donation to such a great cause! 

The afternoon kids ran in the gym since the school field was too wet... but they had a great time too!

Self Portraits

Today we worked very hard to draw a self portrait.  Since we all know how to draw a Mat Man, now we worked on making the arms and legs thicker and adding detail.  We looked in mirrors so we could choose just the right colour for our face and clothes. We learned that artists take their time and try their best to colour neatly.  We even added some jewels on the corners to add the finishing touch! All the portraits turned out great!

Bus Ridership

Today we had a special guest visiter to our school. His name is Bob, and he is a bus driver. Bob took us outside and he taught us 4 safety rules to follow outside of a bus and 4 safety rules to follow inside a bus.  We learned:

Outside Rules

1. Do Not go behind the bus

2. Do Not go under the bus

3. Stay out of the DANGER ZONE. (Area all around the bus)

4. Wait for the driver to wave you across the street before you go in front of the bus.

Inside Rules

1. Sit properly on the seat (Back against the seat)

2. Do Not eat or drink of the bus because you might choke.

3. Use quiet voices on the bus so the driver can concentrate.

4. Nothing goes out the windows.

He also showed us all the emergency exits.  We were surprised when we opened a window and the bus started to make a loud buzzing noise.  Bob also showed all the safety tools he has in case of an emergency.  He said he has never had to use any of those tools. Not even once!

We learned a fun way to get out of a bus in case of an emergency. We had to tuck our arms up under our chins and Bob helped us float down to the ground!

Fun in the Gym and Sharing

We love going to gym.  Every day when we walk into the classroom we check the schedule to see if we have gym.  If we do, there are cheers all around. Miss Dowd snuck into the gym and took a few pictures.

We also have been talking about sharing in Kindergarten.  We read the story We Share Everything by Robert Munsch today.  Then we made a list of all the things that are good to share and things that are not good to share.  It was fantastic how everyone had so many good ideas to share!

Mat Man

We made a new friend in Kindergarten and his name is Mat Man!  He is made out of lines and curves and we all know how to draw him now!  First we listened to the Mat Man song and watched how Mrs. Aremu and Miss Dowd put him together on the carpet.  Then we sat in a circle and took turns adding pieces until he was complete. After we tried drawing our own Mat Man's on white boards and finally we got to draw him on paper.  Some of us even wanted to try to make him on the Smartboard at play time. Everyone did a great job!

David and Chester

We have had a very busy first week. We read all the different No, David! books by author David Shannon. We thought they were super funny!  Even though they were funny, we learned some really important things of what would make a good student.  Take a look at what David taught us.

On the first day of school we read the story "The Kissing Hand."  In the story there is a racoon named Chester who is sad  and doesn't want to go to school. After his mom shares the secret of the kissing hand, Chester is able to go to school feeling happy.  We got to make our own Chester Racoons to take home and share with our families.  The cutting was hard for some friends, but the end results turned out great!

Learning the Kindergarten Routines

We have been very busy learning the different routines in the kindergarten classroom.  Each day the students come in and sign in on the SMARTboard by making their bird fly away.  Then they hand in their mail folder and find a book to read quietly before we start our Group Time.  

At Group Time we go over the daily schedule and review the rules and expectations of the classroom. We are getting really good at remembering all the rules!

Then we start our SMARTboard routine. We have been learning that we can only use 1 finger and only 1 person can touch it at a time.  We have been taking turns learning how to write using the makers. (Sometimes it is tricky because we rest our hand on the board while we are writing and then we get "crazy" lines)

Also we have been learning how to move things on the SMARTboard.  Here we got to move our face to the right place. (4, 5 and 6 year olds)

After Group Time we get to go to centres!  Look what we did this week.  It was a lot of fun!

First Day Fun!

The first day of Kindergarten was a huge success.  Everyone had lots of fun!  We first learned the sign language signs for sit and stand and got to practise them a lot!  We got to try out all the play centers and we even did two "have-to" jobs.  We decorated a "necklace" and then we made orange handprints.  After our jobs, we had our snacks and went on a tour of the school and even got to play in the big gym.  What a busy day.  Take a look at the slideshows to see some first day fun!
