Going on Safari

Today was Safari day!  We got to dress up in a safari vest and hat that we made.  We also made a camera to take pictures. After we put on our safari gear, we got into groups and went for a walk around the school looking for animals.  When we found one, we graphed it.  On our way, we made sure to take lots of pictures with our cameras. It was so much fun!

Handa's Surprise

This week we read the story Handa's Surprise.  It is about a little girl in Africa who packs a basket for her friend Akeyo who lives in a different village. On her way, a bunch a animals take the fruit from her basket. Then a goat rams into a tree and tangerines fall and fill Handa's basket with new fruit.  Both girls are very surprised that the end.

We practiced retelling the story on the smartboard and then we made our own Story Map.  We decorated the background and then cut out the animals and glued them in order.

Then we tried our hand at making baskets out of paper.  We tried very hard to weave the paper, but we found it pretty tricky.  Then we stamped the 7 different fruits that Handa packed for her friend.

Because we love drama so much, we acted out the story.  We all took turns playing the different characters. Here is the Morning Class.

Letter Factory

All year Mrs. Aremu has been helping us learn our letter sounds.  Just like the song says, "every letter makes a sound," and every letter has an action.  We finally made it to the end of the alphabet this week. Take a look at us practicing all our sounds and actions that go with them!

Elmer the Elephant

This week was ELMER week.  We love Elmer!  He is a patchwork elephant who is a good friend, likes to play jokes and is really cute. Miss Dowd read us lots of different Elmer stories and we did lots of Elmer activities all week.  Here are some of the things we did.

At centers we wrote something we liked about Elmer and then drew a picture.   

We got to play an Elmer board game with Mrs. L and fill in the squares on Elmer.

We also got to make a sponge painted Elmer face out of two paper plates and one trunk. It was messy but fun!

With the help of our grade4/5 computer buddies, we made Elmer pictures in Kidpix.

Slideshow design made with Smilebox Since we have been reading so many different Elmer stories, we made a list of all the words that we could think of that described Elmer.  Then we put the list of words into a special website called Tagxedo. We made our very own elephant out of words.

A Special E-mail

Today we got a very special e-mail sent to us from Miss Sawrenko.   She is in Thailand and is teaching grade 2.  She updated us on all her adventures. The kindergartens were very excited to hear from her and were really amazed by her pictures.

Animal hospital

Our dramatic play center has transformed into a Kindergarten Animal Hospital.  We worked together to help set up cages for the animals, a shelf to put all the medicine on and then we sorted all the important tools that might be used.  We have a table to bandage all the animals on and even have costumes to dress up in. The best part was that we got to bring in our own animals to take care of.
