More Penguin Fun!

Last week we learned how to paint penguins. First we painted a white peanut and then we added the eyes, beak and webbed feet. Then we painted black all around the white and added flippers.  To finish off our penguins, we painted a pattern scarf.

Today was the day we got to measure our penguins.  We used 5 different things to see how high and how wide our penguins were. It was lots of fun!

 

After we finished our measuring, we got to make a penguin snack to celebrate all of the learning we have done over the last few weeks! They were fun and easy to make and tasted super yummy!

Penguins

Over the past two weeks, we have been very busy learning about penguins. Here are some of the things that we learned:

Ryan, Ben and Oliver -Penguins slide on their tummies.

Braedan and Alex- Penguins have webbed feet.

Aiden - Penguins have blubber to keep them warm when they dive into the icy cold water.

Maddy and Maddox - They have flippers.

Natalie - Penguins keep their eggs on the top on their feet in their brood pouch.

Liam - Penguins have waterproof feathers.

Wyatt and Violet- Penguins like to eat fish and krill. 

Trent - We learned how to do a penguin dance.

Sarah - Penguins can glide.

Charlotte - They swim in cold water.

Blake - The penguins webbed feet help them slide.  Their feet push the penguin forward.

Kael - Penguins have chicks.

Making Penguin Patterns

We went outside and got lots of snow. Then we put water in the snow to make icy cold water.  We felt the water and thought we would not like to go swimming in icy cold water.  We tried on a blubber glove. Our hands stayed nice and warm. Blubber helps penguins stay warm.

We learned that penguins have water proof feather.  We used wax to keep our penguins water proof.

We are putting goldfish on icebergs.  We had to roll two dice and add the numbers together. Then we go to  eat the goldfish.

We are trying to keep our egg on our feet like a penguin does.  It was hard until we got to wear a pillow as a brood pouch.  Then it was easy!

This is how we showed our learning.  We made our own non-fiction book about penguins that will go in our Daily 5 book boxes.

Freeze and Melt

Because it is so cold out this month, we have not been able to go outside and play at recess.  With our new favourite song Freeze and Melt, we are now having winter fun inside.   We get to act some of the things we like to do in the snow like ice skate, make snow angels, and throw snowballs.

Hedgehogs

We love Hedgie and think he is super cute.  We have been reading lots of stories about hedgehogs and to continue our learning Miss Dowd found some great hedgehog videos for us to watch on the Smartboard. We learned lots of cool stuff. After we watched the video clips, we made lists of things that we learned on the Smartboard.

One of the stories we read was called One Snowy Night.  We got to make our own hedgehogs just like in the story.  We think they turned out pretty great!

Boston Pizza

This week in kindergarten, we have changed the house corner into a Boston Pizza restaurant.  We helped set up tables for the customers, we made a place for our pizza boxes in the kitchen and even a place for the hostess to sit.  It has been so much fun!

The Mitten

We started our first week back at school reading the story The Mitten by Jan Brett.  In the story, a little boy named Nicki drops his mitten in the snow.  A bunch of different animals crawl into the mitten to keep warm. The last animals to go in is a mouse. The mouse make the bear sneeze and all the animals fly out of the mitten.  At the end, Nicki gets his mitten back. 

We have been doing lots of learning and having fun with all kinds of mitten activities.  Here is what we have been up to all week.

At the math center we played a dice game.  We had to role a dice and then cover up as many mittens or hedgehogs as the number on the dice said. We were really good at counting!

At the writing center we got to make our very own mitten story book to add to our Daily 5 buckets.

Then at the art center we got to make an animal from the mitten out of plasticine.  We glued cotton stuffing onto a board to make it look snowy.  Then we got really crafty and sculpted an animal to go into a felt mitten.  We LOVED this center!

We also had time in the computer lab with our grade 4/5 learning buddies. Our job was to draw the mitten and put as many animals into as we could.
