100 Day

We have been counting the days, and it was FINALLY the 100th day of school.  We had so much fun today doing everything the 100 way.  To get us warmed up, we took 100 steps from our classroom.  Then we did 4 different 100 centers.

Center 1 - Making 100 day Crowns.  "It is not a party without a party hat!" We used bingo dabbers to dab 10 strips of paper with 10 dots each.  After we stapled the crown on our heads and gathered the strips of paper together with a paper fastener. The finishing touch was to put the "I am 100 days smarter" tag on the front!

Center 2 - Monsters and Mittens - We had to put 100 spots (Pom Poms) on a big green monster. We counted out 10 groups of ten to make it easier.  Then we put 100 animals in the mitten. The mitten got very full!

Center 3 - Building with 100 cups and 100 Blocks - We had to work together as a team and try to build something with 100 cups or with 100 blocks.  Sometimes the cups kept falling over, but we didn't give up.  We made a plan and we tried again.  It was great seeing everyone working together.

Center 4 - 100 Snack - We counted out 10 smarties, 10 pretzels, 10 goldfish, 10 jellybeans, 10 white chocolate chips, 10 marshmallows, 10 chocolate chips, 10 froot loops, 10 shreddies, and 10 corn pops to make 100!  Then we got to eat it! Yum!

I Love to Read Week

This week it was I love to Read week, and at Linwood school, READING ROCKS!  We had so much fun reading and rocking. Here is what we did all week.

On Monday, it was Snack and Read.  We cozied up with a good book and got to eat a yummy snack.

On Tuesday and all through the week it was D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read)  The afternoon kids were caught reading their Daily 5 Books!

On Wednesday, Joshua, a grade 9 student from St. James Collegiate come and read us a story.  He brought his guitar and played some music too.  We thought he was really good!

On Thursday we had got to see the King of Rock and Roll!  (Well, almost)  Adam T. Elvis read the K-3 students three great stories, and then he put on a rockin' show for the whole school.  Everyone got up and danced at the end!

On Friday, we had the biggest surprise of all.  Our school challenge for the week was for every class to read for 100 minutes.  We almost made it but still needed 10 more minutes.  All the students brought books down to the auditorium and read together.  Then the teachers surprised all the students with two awesome Air Band performances!  Reading sure does Rock at Linwood!

Valentine Holders

We are very excited about Valentine's Day and today we got to design and build our own Valentine Holders.  Before we got started we set some criteria as a class.  Here is the criteria that we had to follow:

1.  Needs to hold valentine cards

2.  Must stay together

3.  Your name needs to be BIG

4.  Lots of decorations

5.  Must have 3 kinds of paper

Post Office

Our Post Office is up and running!  We have been very busy delivering packages, selling stamps, and sorting the mail.  Miss Dowd gets lots of shoes, sunglasses, clothes and paychecks in the mail daily! We also have been writing a lot of letters to our friends. We are having so much fun!

Making Paper

Last week, we went to to office to get some shredded paper so we could recycle it and make new paper.  We brought the shredded paper back to kindergarten.  Then we sat around a big bucket and Miss Dowd poured in lots of water.  We ripped that wet paper into pieces to make paper pulp.  Everyone thought is was really gross.

After the pulp was really soggy, we added crepe paper to dye the paper pulp a pretty colour. We wanted to make valentines so we thought red and purple would be the best.  Here is how we made paper:

Step 1: Dip the screen into the paper pulp

Step 2: Pull up the screen slowly so you can get lots of pulp on it.

Step 3: Squeeze out all the water and let it drip out (We also put another screen on top to help and called it a paper sandwich)

Step 4: Put the wet paper onto a towel and use a rolling pin to roll out as much water as you can

Step 5: Place the paper onto a flat surface and gently pull off the screen

We then let the paper dry over night. Then we had paper! 

100 Gumballs

Did you know that there are only 8 more days until the 100th day of school. We are VERY excited about 100 day! We started off early and made some gum ball machines as decorations for the big day.  We have been working as a team to count out groups of ten to make it easier to count to 100. Today we used bingo dabbers to make 100 gum balls.

We also used the smartboard to make 100 gum balls and we practiced making 100 out of colourful caps and hula hoops on the floor.  It was a very busy day.
