Learning the Kindergarten Routines

We have been very busy learning the different routines in the kindergarten classroom.  Each day the students come in and sign in on the SMARTboard by making their bird fly away.  Then they hand in their mail folder and find a book to read quietly before we start our Group Time.  

At Group Time we go over the daily schedule and review the rules and expectations of the classroom. We are getting really good at remembering all the rules!

Then we start our SMARTboard routine. We have been learning that we can only use 1 finger and only 1 person can touch it at a time.  We have been taking turns learning how to write using the makers. (Sometimes it is tricky because we rest our hand on the board while we are writing and then we get "crazy" lines)

Also we have been learning how to move things on the SMARTboard.  Here we got to move our face to the right place. (4, 5 and 6 year olds)

After Group Time we get to go to centres!  Look what we did this week.  It was a lot of fun!

Making our names out of foam letters for our Kinder Gallery.

Using real chocolate Kisses to show different numbers.  (Everyone got to eat one when they were done)

We started to work on our All About Me books!

First Day Fun!

The first day of Kindergarten was a huge success.  Everyone had lots of fun!  We first learned the sign language signs for sit and stand and got to practise them a lot!  We got to try out all the play centers and we even did two "have-to" jobs.  We decorated a "necklace" and then we made orange handprints.  After our jobs, we had our snacks and went on a tour of the school and even got to play in the big gym.  What a busy day.  Take a look at the slideshows to see some first day fun!

Assiniboine Park Field Trip

What a great day!  The sun was shining, the breeze was blowing, and the kids had a blast sketching flowers, geese and everything else they saw at Assiniboine Park today. At the end, we all cooled off  by eating some ice cream at Sargent Sundae.  A perfect way to end a fantastic year!

Canadian Symbols

This week we have been learning about the "World Around Me." We know that we live in a country called Canada.  We know what our flag looks like. It is red and white and has a maple leaf in the middle. We know this because we look at it every day when we walk into school and we can see it out of our classroom window.  

We have also been learning about Canadian symbols.  When learned that when we see certain objects or people, it makes us think about Canada.  We did two projects to show our learning.  Everyone got to sculpt an inuksuk (Because we are all artists) and we also drew and painted a square for our Canada Quilt.

Kinder Van Gogh

Last week we made a mural of one of Vincent Van Gogh flower paintings.  It is called Vase with Zinnias.  Here is how we made our mural.

Step 1: Find a painting and look closely at the flowers.  We also looked for real photographs of zinnias so we could really see what that type of flower looked like.

Step 2: Everyone paints one flower making sure to look for the details.

Step 3: Miss Dowd cut out all the flowers

Step 4: Sketch out the background and paint.  Make sure to add texture and details just like the real painting.

Step 5: Glue on all the cut out flowers.

Step 6: Step back and look at the beautiful mural!

Going on Safari

Today was Safari day!  We got to dress up in a safari vest and hat that we made.  We also made a camera to take pictures. After we put on our safari gear, we got into groups and went for a walk around the school looking for animals.  When we found one, we graphed it.  On our way, we made sure to take lots of pictures with our cameras. It was so much fun!

Handa's Surprise

This week we read the story Handa's Surprise.  It is about a little girl in Africa who packs a basket for her friend Akeyo who lives in a different village. On her way, a bunch a animals take the fruit from her basket. Then a goat rams into a tree and tangerines fall and fill Handa's basket with new fruit.  Both girls are very surprised that the end.

We practiced retelling the story on the smartboard and then we made our own Story Map.  We decorated the background and then cut out the animals and glued them in order.

Then we tried our hand at making baskets out of paper.  We tried very hard to weave the paper, but we found it pretty tricky.  Then we stamped the 7 different fruits that Handa packed for her friend.

Because we love drama so much, we acted out the story.  We all took turns playing the different characters. Here is the Morning Class.

Letter Factory

All year Mrs. Aremu has been helping us learn our letter sounds.  Just like the song says, "every letter makes a sound," and every letter has an action.  We finally made it to the end of the alphabet this week. Take a look at us practicing all our sounds and actions that go with them!
