We are Awesome Spies! (Week 2)

Spy Mission - Day 5

A spies work is never done! We were ready to take on another mission and to crack the code for yet another kind of lock.  Mr. McKiel came back in the morning for a follow up mission and to share some tips on opening a directional lock.

When we looked at the Escape box, we noticed that the box only had 2 locks this time.  One directional lock and one 4 digit lock.  Since the directional lock did not have any numbers on it, this code was going to look very different than the other codes.  We put on our thinking caps and decided to show the path by recording arrows.

We looked carefully at the path and recorded our code onto a whiteboard.  To make sure we had the correct code, we walked the path that we recorded.  This proved to be a little more complicated than we thought.  We learned that depending on where you were sitting to record your code, it would change the direction of the arrows.  With some quick thinking, Mr. McKiel asked everyone to sit on the same side to ensure they were able to record the correct directions/arrows.

The other team worked on cracking the code for the four digit lock.  We had the same floor mat as before, but somehow needed to get a number for the code.  Instead of recording arrows, we counted the number of steps/circles that each direction on the path had.  This proved to be a little challenging at first, but a good spy never gives up!

In the afternoon, we switched things up a little and worked as a whole class to crack the codes. We learned that everyone's ideas are important and valuable to a spy mission and that we need to be patient and take turns.

"Oh no, my code didn't work.  It tells me to go off the path.  I need to go and fix it."

When we cracked the codes and opened up the locks, we found glasses, evidence jars, tweezers, badge clips and cell phones to help create Spy Headquarters in our classroom!

To be a good spy, you need to practise what you learned.  At discovery, we were challenged to create our own path and write the code!

Spy Mission - Day 6

On our sixth and final Spy Mission, we were so lucky to have Mrs. Mitchell back with us!  This mission required us to follow colour coded lasers and collect letters.  We were divided into the four Spy Teams. (One for each colour)  Each team took turns looking for their colour of letters.  We noticed that there were numbers on the lasers as well, but we couldn't be tricked.   Then, one person from the spy team ran to get a magnet letter and put it on the coloured mat.

The Morning class took on this Spy challenge with lots of energy and couldn't wait to crack the code.  First we learned how to "blend in" so we wouldn't be recognized.  To "blend in" we have to be sitting in our own space, we need to listen to the speaker and raise our hand and wait to share our ideas.

The four teams dodged lasers, collected letters and worked together to figure out what word their letters made.

With our incredible spy skills, we quickly put the words in the correct order to reveal the secret message:
