The Mitten - Part 1

We started the new year by reading a classic story called "The Mitten" by Jan Brett.  In this story, a boy drops his mitten in the snow.  Then a bunch of animals find the mitten and squeeze themselves into it.  By the end of the story, the mitten is stretched all out of shape because of the big animals.  We decided to write our own story and come up with different animals that could go inside a mitten.

You may notice that the students took special care when drawing their pictures.  Everyone is getting very good at adding detail and colour to their work. The students also did a great job writing down the sounds they could hear in the animal name.

At centres we experimented with sewing. It took a lot of concentration, but everyone did a fantastic job. .Next week, we are going to us our mitten and re-tell the story!

Our art project this week was to design a matching pair of mittens.  We first traced two mittens, then we used sharpies to make lines that were the same on each mitten.  We then used pastels to colour in the shapes and to add some wind and snow to the background.  The final touch was to paint a blue wintery looking sky.  They all turned out great!

  2. Wonderful job on all of the mittens! I love the variety of ideas and how detailed they all were! I also really enjoyed seeing everyone's neat ideas on what was inside their mitten (from The Mitten book). Great job sounding out how your animal in your mitten was spelled! :) Rhianna's mom
