Sometimes when you read or listen to a story you become so captivated, that you can't wait to hear it again and again and again. That is exactly what happened when we listened to "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" by Mo Willems. We spent the last few weeks reading all about Pigeon, laughing out loud and then sharing our love of Pigeon with our parents at our Open House.
The first thing we did was to learn how to draw Pigeon. Mo Willems drawings are very simple and easily broken down into simple steps. The results were amazing! Every student was able to draw a pigeon that actually looked like the Pigeon in Mo's books!
We measured the different characters in the Pigeon books with toy vehicles, rocks, blocks, and speech bubbles.

We also put our letter sound knowledge to work and created hot dogs with lots of interesting toppings. All week we practised on the smart board as a class, and then we got the chance to make our very own!

With our love of Pigeon growing every day, we decided we needed to have a Pigeon Party! Each day the students would come in thinking it was the party, but quickly learned that they were the ones who had to help with the planning. As a class, we discussed what we needed to have a Pigeon Party. After we made the plan, we went to work creating all the different things we would need.
Some of us decided we needed costumes...
We also taught our parents how to play two other Pigeon Games that we had been working on all week at Discovery. We showed them how to play "The Sounds on the Bus" and " "Hot Dog Toss."
We really wanted to act out the story too, so we made puppets and worked together to make a stage so we could act out all the different stories.
Then we painted a big bus and bathtub! These worked out so great when it came time for our Pigeon Party Photo Booth!!

The Pigeon Party!
Since we were having a Pigeon, it was only right that we made ourselves look like pigeons. We created Pigeon crowns and then we were ready to party! We danced Mo Willems style with Elephant and Piggie, played Pigeon games and took a bunch of silly photos in the Pigeon Photo Booth.

It wouldn't be a party without a Pigeon snack... so we used graham crackers, oreos, cereal, chocolate chips and coloured icing.
The Pigeon Photo Booth
A great big thank you to all the parents who came to see our learning... and took pictures in our
Photos Booth.

Thank you so much for sharing your pigeon fun with us! Our family loved trying all of the activities at the open house. What a fun way to learn!!!
