Science through Art!

Over the last few weeks, we have been learning all about the science of colour.  First we learned about the three primary colours.  We know that there are three primary colours and they are RED, BLUE and YELLOW.   We looked at some artwork by famous artist Piet Mondrian. We noticed that he used all the primary colours in his work. We cut out different sized squares and took care of where we glued each piece. Then we used cardboard and black paint to make the black lines that we saw.

After learning the primary colours, we completed a variety of mixing experiments to discovery the secondary colours.  We painted our own colour wheels, used eye droppers and coloured water and food colouring and spray bottles.  We were so excited to learn that PURPLE, ORANGE and GREEN come from mixing two of the primary colours together.

After we learned about all the colours, we looked at another famous artist.  Andy Wharhol is a pop artist that painted using bold colours. Often his artwork has multiples of the same image shown. We decided to use our colour wheel and find the complimentary colours.  These are the colours that are opposite on the wheel.  We learned that when complimentary colours are used together, it makes the colours "POP."

The last artist we looked at during our study of colour was Pablo Picasso  We especially focused on his paintings during his "Blue period." When we looked at his paintings, we noticed that he only used blue.  We thought it would be interesting if we painted ourselves just using blue.  Before we started, we added white and black to make different shades and tints of blue.
