Street Art and Graffiti

While I was in Italy, I was very interested in all the different street art and graffiti decorating various buildings.  I was especially intrigued by an artist that used a red heart and a stick man in all his art known as Exit/Enter.  I was so inspired, I came back to Winnipeg, and had my kindergarten students create some of their own street art inspired by pictures I had taken in Italy.

First we talked about how these simple pictures made us feel.  We decided that they made us feel happy. We wanted to share the love and happiness and created some of our very own pictures and hung them up all over Linwood school.

We also wanted to be make sure we hung them up everywhere so it was suggested by a student that we make a map of the school.  This way it would be "fair"

We continued to look at different types of graffiti and noticed that a lot of people use words and names in their street art.  With this in mind, we created our own brick wall complete with splatter paint and graffiti style names.

The last type of street art we looked at was art by Keith Haring. We really liked the bold colours and simple way he drew people.  We also liked that he used movement marks.

The morning class decided that they wanted to make a life size mural inspired by his art.  We tape 4 pieces of mural paper together and then everyone laid down on the paper in interesting positions.  We traced each student and then painted the bodies in with bright colours.

The afternoon went smaller and wanted to each make their own by drawing and painting the figures on a long piece of paper.

The final projects will all be on display at our Celebration of Learning in June!
