Monsters, Monsters, Everywhere!

Lately we have been reading and enjoying a variety of "There Was An Old Lady" books.  This week we found a different version called There Was An Old Monster.  We really liked all the rhyming and repetition in the book. After reading this book we found another book by the same author called If You're A Monster And You Know It.  As we read this book many of us noticed that is was very much like a familiar song. (If you are happy and you know it)  We loved looking at all the monsters and acting out the story/song.  After singing and reading the books, we all created our very own monsters.  They turned out super scary!

"Switch-a-Roo" Centres

One of the things we often do in kindergarten is called "Switch-a-Roo" centres.  These centres last about 7-8 minutes each and then students "Switch- A-Roo" to the next table.  Two centres are always teacher directed and one is independent. The activities at the tables are always play based.  We have done a variety of literacy, math, fine motor and science themed activities.   This week we did three different monster math centres.

The first centre was Monster Cover Up.  We had to roll a die and then find the monster that had the numeral on it.  We are getting very good at recognizing the "pips" (dots) on dice.

At the second table we got to make pattern monster hair.  We made a monster out of play-dough, added pipe cleaners as hair and then made a pattern with beads.

At the last table put eyeballs on different monsters. We had to pick a number card and then put the correct number of googly eyes on the monster.  ((monster templates found here)
