The Gruffalo

This week we had lots of fun with the story The Gruffalo.  We read this story many times so we would become very familiar with it.  We talked about the different characters, the rhyming and all the interesting words in the story. Every time we read the story we noticed different things.  We would not have had so many good discussions had we read the story only once.

Each student made a set of stick puppets with the 4 animals from the story. They had to draw their own Gruffalo to make into a stick puppet.   Once the puppets were coloured, drawn and cut out, the students re-told the story of The Guffalo. Some students used words right from the book while others needed some prompts to help them remember.  Everyone had a great time using their oral language as well as their listening skills.

**Ask your child to re-tell the story of The Gruffalo to you.

This week we also practised our writing skills with the help of The Gruffalo.  We labeled pictures from the story on the Smartboard by looking closely at the first letter in the word.  The next day we practised stretching out the words and writing down all the sounds we could hear.

Then practised with some of the sight words we have been learning.  We used these words to write a sentence about who are favourite character from the story was and then added a period to the end.

After we had practised on the Smartboard, we each got to draw a picture and write our own sentence.

  1. Miss Dowd, I love how you read the story over and over again. I can tell your students learned a lot because they did such a great job of writing sentences all by themselves! Well done everyone! -Mrs. Lowe
